The following information is taken from sources from 1943. Recordings make after this date by the above mentioned performer(s) is not included. This discography may not be complete as a result. I have left the price of recordings/albums (in US currency) as they were priced during 1943 for research purposes.

B. H. Haggin recently quoted Carl Van VecKten as saying that precision is a quality so rare as to be easily mistaken for genius. It is an essential element in any projection of music, whether vocal or instrumental. It is most important of all in any sort of ensemble work. It is, if taken in its true and broadest sense, the one essential ingredient of good chamber-music performance. And it is the quality that singles out the Budapest String Quartet as unique among the many good string ensembles of the day. These four men coalesce into a unit marvelous in accuracy‚ accuracy of attack, pitch, volume, and tempo. It would be difficult to name one single record more admirable in performance than the Budapest String Quartet’s old Victor record of Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade (V-4271). This is not merely a question of individual excellence on the part of one performer or another‚ nothing makes a poorer quartet than one or two star players and the balance mediocre. It is a matter of unity of purpose, coincidence of understanding, and matched ability to carry intention into action.
Unfortunately, Victor has seen fit to cut out a number of superb recordings by the Budapest String Quartet, recordings that already are sorely missed. Columbia, however, adding this ensemble to its list, has assured all who appreciate high excellence in quartet playing that they will continue to have Budapest records made by the most advanced modern methods. No chamber-music enthusiast need be told about this astonishing quartet. Those honest music-lovers who continue to regard quartet-playing as an odd, dull, or even objectionable mewing and scraping of strings could hardly fend a better way of enlarging the field of their own musical enjoyment than by listening with open ears and an open mind to, say, the Budapest String Quartet’s shimmering and exquisite projection of Mozart’s Quartet No 15, D minor, K.421, or Ravel’s Quartet, F major. Here are recordings that may honestly and unsentimentally be called treasures. Music-lovers in general, and record-buyers in particular, have every reason to be grateful to Messrs. Josef Roismann, Alexander Schneider, Boris Kroyt, and Mischa Schneider for continuing to prove, by imagination and precision of the brightest sort, that our own era can produce‚and enjoy‚ quartet-playing of unshakable excellence.

A prodigy from childhood, Jascha Heifetz was born on Feb. 2, 1901 in Vilna, Lithuania. He received his first violin lessons from his father, also a violinist, and entered the Royal Music School at Vilna at the age of 4, where he studied under Elias Malkin. He made his first public appearance at 5 and graduated from the school at 8. Admitted at the Imperial Conservatory in St. Petersburg a year later, he became a pupil of Leopold Auer. Public appearances a few years later in St. Petersburg were followed by a tour of Russia, Germany and Scandinavia. His concert with the Berlin Philharmonic under Arthur Nikisch was electrifying.

Continuing his studies with Auer, he toured Europe with ever increasing popularity. His family moved to New York during the Russian Revolution and on Oct. 28, 1917, be made his debut in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House. This concert was followed by an American tour, and it was about this time that his first Victor records appeared. When electrical recording made its appearance, many of the older discs were re-recorded.

During the early 1940’s Victor arranged for a group of recordings to be made by a group of the outstanding musicians in USA. This group included Artur Rubinstein, William Primrose, Emanuel Feuermann, and Mr. Heifetz.

THE WHY AND THE WHEREFORE OF SOCIETIES

EVERY musician and every lover of music knows that since the advent of electrical recording “His Master’s Voice” have built up an unparalleled library of recordings of great music. In the “His Master’s Voice” general catalogue and what is called the Connoisseurs’ Catalogue together there are listed modern recordings of first class performances of all the acknowledged masterpieces of music for which there is a widespread demand, and of hundreds of works of more limited appeal. Every month brings new and invaluable additions to that incomparable treasure house of music.

But outside the repertoire of music that is in general demand and that it is economically prudent to record, is some of the greatest music, and it is to produce records of the highest possible artistic and technical quality of this unfamiliar music that the Society movement was organised. Its basic principle is self-help in music: under the auspices of “His Master’s Voice” and the guidance of the greatest authorities of the particular composers concerned, a number of enthusiasts for that composer band together to make possible the recording.

The first Society was formed in the September of 1931 for recording Hugo Wolf’s songs, and the response to that venture was such that Societies for recording all Beethoven’s Pianoforte Sonatas, the best of Haydn’s String Quartets, of the music of Sibelius, the greatest symphonist since Beethoven, were soon formed. Since then other Societies have been added to that number; and working on the same basic principle limited Editions of certain works, not in themselves calling for the establishment of a special Society, have been published.

The records published by these means have established a standard by which are judged, not only all other records but in Mr. Ernest Newman’s words “by which other performances can and will be judged.” Their authoritativeness is beyond dispute or question; in every case the artist chosen for recording a.ch particular work is the best living artist for the task, and the recording is invariably as good as the latest developments of modern science can make it.

It is impossible to over-estimate the advantage of being a member of one, or better still of all, of the Societies and subscribing for these limited Editions with these records you are able to enjoy and study perfect performances of works that are rarely given in the concert room or by wireless, and in the course of a few days you can know even a Symphony by Sibelius as you would never be able to by concert-going. To quote Mr. Ernest Newman again “These Societies will do more in five years for the music they record than we musical critics could do in a century.”

Each Society depends for its ability to carry out its programme on the continued support of music lovers. With the enthusiastic and consistent support of the musical public the Society movement can and will enrich the world of music and the life of every lover of music to an unprecedented degree.

The Rules of the Societies :—

(1) There is no entrance fee.
(2) The subscription for each volume must be paid in advance.
(3) Records are available only to members.
(4) No records can be purchased separately. Should a member break or otherwise damage a record he must return the damaged record when applying for a replacement.
(5) The records will be delivered either direct to the subscriber or dealer with whom he enrols.
(6) The records and albums will be packed and delivered free of charge to any address in Great Britain but postage and custom charges abroad must be borne by the customer.
